For those traveling to the Turks and Caicos Islands for some summer fun in the sun, you might want to plan your vacay around one of our most exciting and exhilarating seasonal events! On July 5, swimmers from around the globe will compete in the “Race for the Conch” Eco Seaswim. Now in it’s 5th year, this local charity event has raised money and awareness for worthy causes, such as Provo Children’s Home, which is dedicated to providing a safe and nurturing shelter for needy kids, and the TCR Reef Fund, which is dedicated to preserving and protecting the delicate marine ecosystem of the Turks and Caicos.
Participants of all ages can compete in different divisions; the 2.4 mile race (Ironman), the 1 mile race and the 1/2 mile race. There are
also women’s and children’s divisions. This year, there is even a new 1/2 mile stand-up paddle boarding race that takes place around
carefully-placed buoys!
On race day, you can feel the tinge of excitement in the air as the conch is blown, and racers from Europe, America, Canada and the surrounding islands run into the water and start the competition, each hoping to earn their best time yet. The warm and sparkling turquoise waters, the squawks of the seagulls and the cheers from the crowds on the beach all add to the magic of the moment, as each swimmer races for the chance to win a beautifully-hand crafted conch trophy.
Besides the highly-coveted trophies, all participants who finish a race earn a medal, a T-shirt and a tote bag, commemorating their participation in this unique Eco Seaswim. Indeed, this event has been called, “One of the World’s Most Gorgeous Swim Races” by the Daily News of Open Water Swimming and it’s a fantastic way to show your support of bettering the beautiful Turks and Caicos Islands by supporting the participating charities. If you can’t compete, come on out and be a supporter of the competitive racers, swimmers and paddle boarders from across the globe. Either way, participating in this local event is sure to be a memorable and fun summer event that you will not soon likely forget.
